how to use debug uart for comms with esp32-at?

Hello,
I built and flashed the esp32-at, but I cannot use the USB port in the dev-kit for AT communication (normal reset text comes out, but no answer to any AT command)
In menuconfig, there is only one UART port (uart1) available for AT communications, and I think the USB port is hardwired to uart0.
I could just plug a USB-serial cable to those pins of Uart1, but if I remember well, the base firmware it shipped with was that and I could play with the AT commands with the same USB as for programming.
Does anyone know the missing trick?
