can't debug

I'm brand new to esp32. Working on a MacBook M1. Installed ESP-IDF, and can build, flash, run and monitor apps. Both from the CLI and using the VS code extension. However I can not debug. Whether I try and debug from the CLI or from VS code, I get a error like:

ERROR: Unable to start debugging. Unexpected GDB output from command "-interpreter-exec console "target remote /dev/cu.usbserial-027D709C"". Invalid hex digit 76

I'm completely stuck so any help appreciated
