i2c_master_cmd_begin() and error code 263 (timeout)

I know this is a dead thread, but I wanted to pop in from the future and tell you that the esp32-S3 I was using was giving me 236 timeouts no matter what I changed on my settings. Then I went and changed my set_i2c_timeout to something like 19 which was a reasonable (longish) timeout and boom everything started working. Thank you so much for detailing it out and linking to the GitHub thread with details. This saved me a lot of time.
