sending AT commands

We are new to this. We have been following the documentation(ESP-AT Users Guide) and managed to load the firmware into the chip. We believe the download worked correctly from looking at the ESP32 startup log. We cannot figure out how to sent AT commands to it. Perhaps you can point me in the right direction. Thank you.
