ESP32-WROOM-32 firmware update?

Hi,

I am unable to update the firmware on my ESP32-WROOM-32 using either the esptool.py tool or ESP32 DOWNLOAD TOOL V3.8.8.

I am able to connect to my board just fine. Please look at picture 1.

When I run esptool.py, it just pops up a command line screen very quickly then exits without reporting an error. Please look at picture 2.

When I run the ESP32 DOWNLOAD TOOL V3.8.8, it just prints "....____" over and over and never reports an error message. Please look at picture 3.

Does anyone know what is going on wrong here that I am unable to update the firmware on my boards?

Do you have an auto-reset circuit in place, or some other way of placing the module into bootloader mode (e.g. buttons)?
