Optimizing ESP32 WROOM-E Devkit Power Supply

Postby alexander96 » Fri May 21, 2021 4:26 pm

Hello, I am currently developing a PCB with a ESP32 WROOM-E, I used the Devkit Schematics I found here:
https://dl.espressif.com/dl/schematics/ ... v4-sch.pdf

I am currently using this voltage regulator:
https://www.mouser.de/ProductDetail/Tex ... Dk3hw4bA==

Unfortunately the power supply of the micro usb port and 5V phone charger ist not reliable and so the ESP32 crashes if there is a power consumption peak.

My PCB should exactly work for this use case so I need to fix my PCB Design so it works even if there is a power consumption spike.

Is there a simple way in fixing the power supply by adding some components to the design or did anybody of you had similiar problems and solutions for this?

Sincerly
Alexander

Does nobody has an idea?
The power spike occours when I read out a RFID Card with the RC522 RFID Modul an then immediately make an http request afterwards.
The problem also occours when I use the newest version auf the ESP32 Devkit with a ESP32WROOM-E so its not just my PCB design.

I also tried to change the capaciator next to the ESP32 and next to the voltage regulator from 22uf to 100uf but it didnt change anything..

One of the things I noticed is that your LDO has a dropout voltage of 1.2V which is pretty high - it means proper working isn't guaranteed when the power supply drops to 4.5V. Perhaps you can change for a LDO with a less high dropout voltage?

What is your 5v phone charger rated for? 500mA, 1A, 2A?

Are capacitors close to the esp32 power supply pins? 100nF and 1uF
