ESP32-S3-BOX-3B no longer responds

Postby ganbaranba » Sun Nov 17, 2024 6:28 pm

Initially, the ESP32-S3-BOX-3B was turning on when connected to my Mac, and I was able to connect to it via esptool, flash it etc.

However, now it shows briefly as a "USB/JTAG debug unit" (maybe for a second) and disappears - this happens on another mac, with other cables etc, so I'm pretty sure it's not dependent on the machine I'm connecting it to or cables.

I tried pressing boot and reset then releasing boot button. Also tried holding boot button and unplugging / replugging usb c cable.

Is there any option besides trying to flash via USB to UART? Is there any easy way to do USB to UART flashing, or will I need to disassemble?

In `dmesg` on mac, I seee messages like this:
```
[ 4298.750165]: AppleUSBIORequest: AppleUSBIORequest::complete: device 3 (USB JTAG/serial debug unit@02110000) endpoint 0x82: status 0xe00002ed (transaction error): 0 bytes transferred
Hello,Is your newly burned program occupying the USB pins, or is it constantly restarting?
Thanks for the reply @ESP_Xuxin!
How could I figure this out?
Here's what I can observe:
* Shows up briefly (a second) in ESP Launchpad connect window, then disappears
* Shows up briefly (a second) via lsusb then leaves
* I can press the mute microphone button and the orange LED comes on
I don't think I can do much more observation because the USB connection doesn't work, so I can't use esptool etc.
Any other ideas on what I could do?
If you want to try flashing something else into the Box, you can try holding the 'boot' button, then pressing and releasing the 'reset' button, then releasing the 'boot' button. This should allow you to flash the unit again. Note that after flashing you may need to press the 'reset' button to start the flashed program.
Hi ESP_Sprite,
Thanks for your response.
Actually, I previously tried this a few times:
> you can try holding the 'boot' button, then pressing and releasing the 'reset' button, then releasing the 'boot' button
Even when I do this, the same behavior continues, i.e.
> However, now it shows briefly as a "USB/JTAG debug unit" (maybe for a second) and disappears - this happens on another mac, with other cables etc, so I'm pretty sure it's not dependent on the machine I'm connecting it to or cables.
Since it only shows up for a second and then disappears (this happens in `lsusb` as well as ESP Launchpad etc), I don't think there's any way for me to flash something new onto it.
Please confirm whether the device has entered boot mode. Press and hold boot first, then press reset or power on. Boot key is the one above.
Boot mode has nothing to do with the application, unless the board is really broken.
Thanks both!
I had tried the "hold boot mode button, press reset, release boot mode" a few times, but this time it worked. :D
In case it's useful to anyone else reading this thread in future, I did (on Mac):
``` watch -n 1 ioreg -p IOUSB```

When I plugged in the device, I would see a JTAG device appear and disappear.

I left `watch` running, plugged in the device (JTAG device appeared and disappeared).

Held down boot mode, pressed reset, released boot mode.

JTAG device appeared and stayed - I was then able to flash the device using ESPLaunchpad.

Thanks both for the help!
