1st stage loader bootloop

Postby szwagier » Sun Sep 22, 2024 9:03 am

Hello.
I'm trying to run a 'hello world' project from IDF examples on a custom board. Chip is ESP32S3FH4R2 (integrated Flash and PSRAM).
Flashing runs smoothly:

Code: Select all

esptool.py v4.7.0

Chip is ESP32-S3 (QFN56) (revision v0.2)
Features: WiFi, BLE, Embedded Flash 4MB (XMC), Embedded PSRAM 2MB (AP_3v3)
Crystal is 40MHz

Veryfing too:

in endless loop.
I tried different flash mode settings, 40MHz flash speed, without success.
Also tried other examples, even precompiled .bin files, result is the same.
In bootloader settings in menuconfig i changed debug level, watchdog timeout, but all this has no effect.

I added a 100n capacitor on SPI_VDD. Voltage on this pin is stable 3.28V.
Then I unsoldered the chip connected to GPIO33-37.
No result.
Now I'm out of ideas. Am I missing something obvious?

Odd, I don't immediately see anything wrong with your setup. Do you have an ESP32S3 devboard you can flash the 'hello world' app into, to check if there's not something subtly wrong with your software environment?

Yes, i have two dev boards, the 'hello world' example (and any other) run on it without problems.
I flashed my board using a USB2UART converter, from Raspbery Pi serial port and directly from RS232 laptop port via MAX3232. Always same result.
In General Guidelines i found this:
The ground pad at the bottom of the chip should be connected to the ground plane through at least nine ground vias.
I have only 2 vias, could this be the cause of the problem?

I doubt that... fewer vias may affect RF performance, but shouldn't lead to boot issues like you have.

One more thing, the messages on the console are displayed correctly only if I select 38400 bps baudrade. On default 115200 i see only unrecognizable characters. Is this a normal behavior or suggests any problems with the clock?

That indeed sounds like the crystal somehow is not running at the correct frequency.
