I am in the process of building a custom pcb integrating the ESP32 S2.
I am looking at the Wemos ESP32 S2 as a reference implementation.

Now, because I am a total newbie with this chip, I would like a confirmation that the version with code ESP32-S2 requires external flash and cannot be used without it:

While the version below integrates the flash in the chip?

Sorry for the basic question, I am trying to put together a proof of concept prototype.

Yes. Ref the datasheet, specifically table 1 on page 11.

You may want to use a module instead of the chip, it will make your design effort much easier. There's a product selector on the website.
