Charging a LiFePO4 battery which powers an ESP32

Postby bernhard » Thu Jul 27, 2023 10:47 pm

G'day.
I am developing an ultra-low power device and I have a LiFePO4 battery connected to the 3.3V Pin of an ESP32. Now I want to charge the battery and I am wondering if I can connect a TP5000 battery charger to this pin as well. The battery charger will output 3.6V to charge the battery (+/- 0.05V). The maximum allowed voltage on the ESP32 3.3V pin is 3.65V but I have read online that the ESP can handle up to 3.8V on this pin.
What are your thaughts about this? is this possible? Someone has tried this before?

I have TP5000 as a LiFePo charger and it works perfectly just in a way you described. It can also be used as a solar charger provided you are using the panel with max voltage within 5~6V range.
The only thing you should care about is a low voltage protection circuit to cut off the ESP and peripherals when the battery discharges to ~2.8V
