Receive BLE data on ESP32

Postby cards2019 » Sat Mar 06, 2021 8:50 am

Hello, I am trying to receive data through BLE on my M5Stack Core 2, which uses an ESP32. I have an arduino that is sending a random integer between 1 and 100 and the ESP32 is reading it. I am using the BLE_client example but I cannot read the data properly. I've tried making adjustments and hacking together other examples but so far no luck. Attached is a screenshot of what the Serial Monitor looks like with the BLE_client example. Do I just need to properly convert the char from ascii to decimal? I haven't been able to get that to work yet. Does anyone have a simple example of how to receive a number value? I have done this same project with two Arduinos that worked great. One Arduino sends two characteristics - pitch and roll - and the other Arduino receives the 2 integers and plots them. I have attached my arduino code that sends data and my esp32 code that receives data. Any suggestions? Thank you.

To me all works fine, but you are trying to print char string, which should be 0x0 terminated:

Code: Select all

static void notifyCallback(
  BLERemoteCharacteristic* pBLERemoteCharacteristic,
  uint8_t* pData,
  size_t length,
  bool isNotify) {
    Serial.print("Notify callback for characteristic ");
    Serial.print(pBLERemoteCharacteristic->getUUID().toString().c_str());
    Serial.print(" of data length ");
    Serial.println(length);
    Serial.print("data: ");
    Serial.println((char*)pData);
}
What you are sending is integer value (easy way, because its 1 byte value):

Code: Select all

Serial.println(pData[0]);
or
Serial.printf("%d\n", pData[0]);

Chegewara, Thank you very much! It is now working. I knew it would be something simple - I am still a beginner. Now that this is down, I can focus on how to receive the second characteristic.

The shared codes really worked for me and saved me from a problem I've been struggling with for days.

cards2019 many thanks thanks.
