Root node with Ethernet, routing bidirectional IP packets

Is it possible to run a mesh with a fixed root node that has an ethernet connection rather than a connection to a Wi-Fi router?
Details:
Ethernet has IP hosts on subnet X
Mesh has IP nodes also on subnet X
Fixed mesh root node has an Ethernet port (~WIZ5500) and enables IP communication between any two nodes/hosts across subnet X
