connection to socket

I'm still new to the ESP32-MDF world and got stuck with a relatively basic problem.
Im running the softAP example on one wroom module and added a task to implement neil kolbans server implementation:
https://github.com/nkolban/esp32-snippe ... ets/server
I can connect to the wifi using my iphone and was able to connect to the server as well. Some additional log-prints from the server side confirmed that.
Now I'm trying to run esp-mdf/examples/function_demo/mwifi/router/ on a second wroom
Wifi connection works fine - but I cant get the client to connect to my tcp server.
I added a"socket created" - line for debugging purposes. Other then that I changed nothing to the code so far - only wrote the sdkconfig.
are there some obvious flaws in my setup? A different port on both sides wasn't the answer either.
