What is the difference between release version and branch for esp-idf?

What is the difference between release version and branch for esp-idf?

When downloading the ESP-IDF from VSC I have to select the desired branch:

what is the difference between:

- v5.4 (release version)
- release/v5.4 (release branch)

why should I prefer one or the other?
