Im using a Mac I cant seem to download the git repo:
git clone --recursive http://github.com/espressif/esp-idf.git

I get this response

Cloning into 'esp-idf'...

That's more likely something to do with your Internet connection to Github than anything else... This page has some suggestions to what you could do, though.
