Current supplied by external supply

Postby snehar » Thu Feb 17, 2022 5:05 pm

Dear Co-Developers,

For the development of a module using ESP32-C3, in the data sheet, under section 4.2 for the recommended operating conditions, it is indicated that the external supply has a min of 0.5A current at VDD. However the max current consumption of the chip (for RF operation) is 335mA. Can you please help in clarifying if 0.5A current is really required ? If yes, for what reasons ?

Thank you,
Cheers
Sneha

You want that half an amp. Reason is that at some points (most importantly, during calibration) the WiFi can have a very short spike of very high power use, and a LDO that can supply enough power stops the chip from browning out.

Hello Colleagues,

Thanks a lot for your answer.

Questions:-

1. Does it mean, will it be a peak current requirement for a short time and not a constant? If yes, can you tell the duration of the spike that it lasts?

2. In the data sheet, the minimum current requirement is specified as 0.5A.
Is there a requirement for maximum current?
If yes, can you please tell us in which case(for example at a particular voltage etc) it might occur?
And if it is a spike, can you tell the duration of the spike that it lasts?

Thank you again :)

Sorry, I can't. Hence the recommendation to use a power supply capable of delivering 0.5A continuously.
2. In the data sheet, the minimum current requirement is specified as 0.5A.

That is not how electronic currents work.
