SOC board with ESP32, how to use it?

Hi.
I'm doing a bring-up to a new soc board with esp32 on it.
The esp 32 is connected using UART (tty1) and spi. UART is for the ctrl I think.
My board is running Linux.

It's the first time i'm using this device, and I'm not sure how I suppose to communicate with it using UART.
I can open the uart device and use the read/write methods of the device. The question is what is the protocol the ESP32 expect? How I can read specific ctrl registers of the ESP32? is it the right way to work with it?
