PWM signal

Hello,
I am working on a project which used proximity detector to measure the distance from the surface.
I could not find a right function that i could use in this case.
There are lot of examples for a LEDcPWM but I am not very sure if that is what I am supposed to use.

Can anyone suggest me how to procceed
