Unable to identify serial port for ESP32-DevKitC on my MacBook Pro

Postby John Kuang » Sun Feb 04, 2018 2:19 pm

What I have
(1) ESP32-DevKitC (No doubt for I have checked my board against the graphic in https://esp-idf.readthedocs.io/en/lates ... vkitc.html)
(2) MacBook Pro, macOS High Sierra version 10.13.2

What I did
Following
https://esp-idf.readthedocs.io/en/lates ... index.html
https://esp-idf.readthedocs.io/en/lates ... ction.html
step by step and have installed
CP210x USB to UART Bridge VCP Drivers(https://www.silabs.com/products/develop ... cp-drivers Download for Macintosh OSX (v5))
successfully.

My problem
I cannot identify the serial port on my MacBook Pro for ESP32-DevKitC.
I plugged/unplugged ESP32-DevKitC and "ls /dev/cu.*" and both got 2 files listed:
  • cu.Bluetooth-Incoming-Port
    cu.JohnsMacBookPro-Bluetoo
And then I tried both above with "make menuconfig" and then "make flash" but none of above cu.* ports works.

According to an answer here (viewtopic.php?f=2&t=1365) it was said
Have you installed Silabs VCP driver? DevKitC should show up as /dev/tty.SLAB_USBtoUART.
while I did install the driver successfully but found no such "/dev/tty.SLAB_USBtoUART"

I tried plugging/unplugging ESP32-DevKitC again and ls the whole /dev/ folder and got the same result (no difference between plugging/unplugging).

Ask for help and thanks in advance.

I have been struggling with the same issue. I had visibility of the port, with the same name, a few weeks ago. Now I don't and restarts, reinstallation of the driver, etc. have not resolved the issue. A colleague suggested that "Some USB-to-serial devices on Mac leave tied up kernel modules, where the device "shows" in about/system profile but you can't get the /dev/ device for it. You have to reboot to get that back, and the result is that if you don't fix the drivers, you can at most plug/unplug once per port per reboot."

But I have not found that rebooting, unplugging/plugging the device fixes this. Have you found a solution?
