My Esp32 getting very hot and damaged

Postby AliShomam » Thu Sep 14, 2023 12:20 pm

Im using esp32 wroom module in my Micromouse project and suddenly the esp started getting very hot and i cannot upload code to it anymore
I was powering esp32 from a mini buck converter with 4.9 v and the input to the buck was 11.7 v
I’m using 3 TOF vl53l0x and 1 MPU 6050 and powering them from the 3.3v on the esp32 board
Motor driver is l9110 and the motors are two N20 motors
At first I thought that the problem is the motor driver so I changed it and connected another esp32 and it burnt too
I dont know why that happened if anyone can help me
I attached all what you can need to see

You have motor drivers on your PCB but you're not doing any decoupling anywhere... chances are that EMC leaks from your motors to the buck converters and messes up the feedback path of those. Suggest putting a bunch of capacitors (like 220uF/16V) between the ground and your voltage rails, for one.

Aside from that, before you kill another ESP, measure the voltages on all the pins that go to/from the ESP32 board. You might have killed something in such a way that it sends a >>3.6V signal to one of the GPIOs, and that will kill an ESP32 fast.

I would have disconnected the ESP32 from the robot car and checked that separately.
