Arduino IDE not recognising any ESP32 boards.

I have used the IDE ver 1.8.9 and others to program several variants of the esp32 boards. Then something changed and I can no longer get sketches to compile, I get the following error message:
Board D1_mini32 (or any other variant) platform ESP32, package esp32 is unknown.

I have uninstalled and reinstalled different versions of the IDE and done the esp32 installation several times with git and other ways. The board variants show up in The preferences and board manager as well as in the board selection window.

In addition all the files sem to be present in the espressif directory in the IDE

Can anyone offer a solution or some help?
This is the error I get no matter what type of esp32 board is selected.

In your ArduinoIDE/preferences, ensure you have the correct JSON listed:

https://github.com/espressif/arduino-es ... manager.md

Then using the IDE board manager, select the ESP32 official install. You may wish to uninstall first and then do a clean install.
