WiFi RSSi function on hardware

Hello,
im working on a project that uses the RSSI function to call the value of the wifi signal strength, its working.
But id like to know how the called function works on physical hardware. Like how is it measured and so on... would be nice if someone could give me some detailed insights and explain it to me.
