Problem driving two DC Motors in a straight line

Postby suryaa » Tue Jul 17, 2018 12:07 pm

I am trying to drive two motors in a straight line but it always seems to turn left. I am using two standard 12V DC Motors and two encoders with l9110s motor driver. I can't seem to figure out what is going wrong. Could someone tell me what is wrong with the code?

Code: Select all

#include "esp32-hal-ledc.h"
#include "esp32-hal-timer.h"

hw_timer_t * timer = NULL; //Created Hardware Timer

//Right Motor
#define rpwm 19 //pin A
#define rdir 18 //pin B

//Left Motor
#define lpwm 23 //pin A
#define ldir 22 //pin B

//Photo Interrupters
#define rightenc 4
#define leftenc 2

//Variables
unsigned long rightWheel;
unsigned long leftWheel;
double lenc = 0;
double renc = 0;
double finalleft = 0;

//Motor Specifications
const int freq = 50000;
//PWM Channel range : (0-7)
const int pwmChannel_left = 0;
const int pwmChannel_right = 1;
const int resolution = 16;

double speedo=62100; //Inital speed given to both motors (PWM value)
double error = 0; //Error between both motors
double errorSum=0; //Sum of all errors for intergrative part of PID
double finalError=0; //final error calculated
double kp = 0.5; //Proportionality constant (tune using trial and error)
double ki = 0.005; //Integrative constant
volatile byte PIDreval = LOW; //Flag to check if PID was corrected

//Timer Interrupt
void IRAM_ATTR TimerInt()
{
  PIDreval=HIGH;
  renc=rightWheel;
  lenc=leftWheel;
  error=renc-lenc;
 /* Serial.print("1.Error in Timer: ");

  //Final PI formula

Welcome to the real world.

Turning both motors equally in order to move forward is a non trivial problem.

You will need to use a dual PID controllers using feedback from rotation sensors in order to maintain each wheel's speed. However, it is easier said than done.

You can use a stepper motor for better control but it will compromise speed and flexibility.

The rover can also be aligned using an external reference for example IR beam; or you may use a camera with line detection to ensure straight line movement.

If there is a trivial solution, kindly share.
