Hi!
Yesterday I had buried 4 ESP32 Development board...
The symptoms are - when board are connected to external power source to VIN & GND the board become really HOT. I can't even touch it... And then board become dead - the response is FLASH is not reachable ore something similar.
Diagnosis.
When the board powered from external power source (in my case 4S 18650 16.8V 7Ah with ability to support up to 20A) and connected to USB Type-C through USB hub for flashing, Type C are trying to charge notebook from USB. As far as it get not much wats from notebook perspective there is no any sign, that it trying to charge...

Can you take a picture to show your test enviroment? As you said, boards gets hot, are VCC & GND shorted?

Sorry for late answer.
Nope.. GND and VCC is not shorted.
incoming power: 16.8V 14A connected through DC-DC step down (With short protection) 16.8 -> 5V to VCC & GND.

What part of the board gets hot? the Esp32 Wroom or just the ams1117 regulator?
