Hello ESP-IDF Community,
I am writing to bring attention to a feature request that I believe is crucial for many applications developed using the ESP-IDF platform, including my own.
My application requires network time synchronization, and I have been using the OpenThread stack for networking functionalities. OpenThread provides a function, otNetworkTimeGet, which allows retrieval of the current network time. Unfortunately, ESP-IDF does not currently support this function, which has posed a significant challenge.
Setting up an alternative network time synchronization mechanism is complex, prone to errors, and increases both the development time and maintenance efforts. Another option would be to switch to a different chipset or platform that supports otNetworkTimeGet, but this is not feasible at this stage of development and would involve a complete overhaul of the hardware and software architecture.
I have created a GitHub issue regarding this request (link to the GitHub issue), and I am posting here to seek support from the community and the ESP-IDF development team. Supporting otNetworkTimeGet in ESP-IDF will not only benefit my application but also others that require network time synchronization. It is a fundamental feature for many applications and will make ESP-IDF more versatile and compatible with the OpenThread stack.
I understand that the development team has a lot on their plate, and I appreciate all the hard work that goes into maintaining and improving ESP-IDF. However, I believe that this feature is crucial and would greatly appreciate it if it could be prioritized.
Thank you for your consideration and support.
