TLS connection reset: I (33839) mbedtls: ssl_tls.c:5170 got an alert message, type: [1:0]

Hello folks,

after stabilizing the wifi (pings are running fine now), I've some problems with MQTT / TLS - MQTT without TLS is doing fine.
Version: esp-idf v.3.3
Client: esp-mqtt
Broker: Mosquitto (Debian Stretch & Debian Buster)

I enabled TLS debugging at first, the mqtt-client is able to send two messages (Look for MQTT_EVENT_PUBLISHED) using QoS 1. After a while the connection resets and the client reboots.

Code: Select all

I (24099) mqtt.c: MQTT_EVENT_PUBLISHED, msg_id=11094

Hi yanoz,

Each end of a TLS connection can send notifications (warnings or errors) to each other. In this case, the other end is sending the "I'm going to close the connection" notification to the ESP:

Code: Select all

I (33839) mbedtls: ssl_tls.c:5170 got an alert message, type: [1:0]
I (33849) mbedtls: ssl_tls.c:5185 is a close notify message
You can read about them in the TLS standard especially "7.2.1. Closure Alerts": https://tools.ietf.org/html/rfc5246#page-28

This one is "warning" [1] "close_notify [0]. There's no errror reported, it's just telling you "I'm closing now" as a more polite way than just closing the socket.

To try to find out why it closed, you'll need to look at the Mosquitto logs on the server side.

Of course, this shouldn't cause a crash:

Code: Select all

E (33879) MQTT_CLIENT: Read error or end of stream
I (33889) mqtt.c: MQTT_EVENT_DISCONNECTED
I (33889) status.c: Got status 5
Guru Meditation Error: Core 0 panic'ed (InstrFetchProhibited). Exception was unhandled.
Core 0 register dump:
Are the mqtt.c & status.c lines coming from your project's code?

Is it possible your code is calling back into the ESP-MQTT API with some no-longer-valid parameters?
