While I like fish I hate red herring. I was kinda right in my claim that the API broke my code. But, more true, is that it was more the fact that the API was covering up my poor programming procedures.
From igrr on Oct 30th:
"Don't forget to initialize NVS using nvs_flash_init() before enabling WiFi.
Previously that was not strictly required, as WiFi driver would also call nvs_flash_init if the application didn't".
I stopped short of finding the solution myself when I did not search on the error result your code suggestion revealed.
Now both applications work again.
The best permanent solution of all this would be to drop all this and pick up basket weaving. At 64 I'm a little old to be learning new high tech tricks.
While Igrr might be Mr. WiFi.
