Help! Wifi power while waiting for IP from AP

Postby FluxGS » Thu May 04, 2023 6:13 pm

Hello and thank you for your read!
I am trying to understand a high battery discharge rate in a battery application which I have been using since 2017.

The only new element is how long it takes to get an IP from the AP. It used to be in milliseconds and is now averaging 12 seconds.

The battery drain corresponds to this shift.

MY QQQuestion is: What is the wifi power while waiting for an IP from the AP??

My assumption is that listening to the AP for an IP required low power (non transmit).

Can someone confirm if the wifi tx power is enabled while waiting for and IP?

If so, is there a way to turn if off and listen only?

We are having kind of a battery drain crisis here and any help is appreciated!

Health and regards,

I also wonder what is the wifi power during an AP scan?

Please help.

Hard to say. Tx uses a fair bit of power, but Rx also is not cheap (datasheet section 5.5 indicates about 100mA) but by the time DHCP is active, presumably DTIM would already have kicked in (depends on the access point and your configuration) lowering that number by a fair bit. Do you have any idea why it would take 12 seconds to get an IP? That's fairly long.

Thank you for your reply. Unfortunately, the time to receive an IP address has recently expanded and is not entirely under our control. Trying to understand what criteria is causing the new battery drain condition. It sounds like a long IP wait could contribute.
