ESP32-P4 eval board: Current consumption puzzling

Postby Maximilian22 » Thu Jan 30, 2025 7:15 pm

Hi community (-:

I want to use the P4 board with display for a KNX house automation panel. Since it will be rarely used, the display is supposed to switch off for inactivity periods and wake up at a touch.

Today I made some power consumption measurements:
Board + display with backlight on ca. 770 mA
Board + display with backlight off ca. 270 mA
Board (display 5V pin disconnected) ca. 160 mA
Display with backlight off ca. 110 mA (board connected, but not measured in)

Two things puzzle me:
The display data sheet says typical current consumption is 180 mA. That's not the case with my setup, it's 500 mA - and would fit 27 LEDs instead of 9 as printed in the data sheet.
The other one is that the rest of the system without display consumes 160 mA. That's far higher than I had wished. I checked the GPIO54 which controls the ESP32-C6 enable pin, but that's in low-state, so the C6 shouldn't consume anything significant.

Does anyone can help me please with reducing the power consumption of the P4 eval board? Are there any other components I could switch off?

By the way, the display seems not to support the esp lcd sleep function, I've tested that. But luckily the touch function is still working even when the 5V supply is cut off (-:

Cheers,
Max
