How to convert WROVER-IB modules to use the internal PCB antenna?

Due to an ordering mistake we have bought a batch of WROVER-IB modules instead of WROVER-B.

Since the antenna is selected between internal and external using a jumper on the top of the PCB next to the IPEX connector, I've tried to remove it and place a solder blob on the pads that would select the internal antenna.

The ESP can now connect to the WiFi network, but reception is very poor, something like -75~-80dB in the same room as the router. A normal WROVER-B from a previous batch gets -52dB in the same device on the same workbench.

Is there some trick or other requirement to what jumper should be used and just a solder blob is not good enough?

Thanks

Here you will find information about Multi-Antenna Configuration.

I have no experience with this, but multi-antenna software switching may be necessary.

The WROVER-IB module doesn't have that unfortunately, it just uses a jumper to select between the PCB antenna and the IPEX connector. (-B modules have it set to the PCB antenna by default and no connector installed, -IB have the connector and the jumper in the opposite position)

I'm still puzzled as to why a solder blob of such a small size would affect reception so much and haven't been able to find a solution (other than going and buying antennas — which gives at least -55dB in the setting)
