Best (Affordable) amp and speaker setup available?

Hello everyone.

I currently am playing audio through an MAX98357 I2S Audio Amplifier and a 4Ohm 40mm Diameter 3W Speaker. The volume is very low and if I try to turn it up the quality becomes horrible. Can you please recommend a better setup for me to use? I really need a solution that has the power savings/disable mode as well. This unit is going to run from batteries and will sit without use for 95% of its time. Thank you for any help, I really appreciate it.
