ESP32-WROVER-IE antenna selection

Postby Rusty_technician » Fri Sep 06, 2024 1:00 pm

Hi,
I need help with understanding and selecting an Antenna for my requirement. I initially used ESP8266 to create a Wi-Fi AP network and a local Web server port to facilitate two way communication between Arduino Mega and a Raspberry pi. Raspberry pi connects to the Wi-Fi and utilizes web server to send messages to ESP, ESP analyses the message and send required commands to Arduino Mega through serial communication (Tx-Rx). Arduino mega performs tasks and sends a response to ESP and task feedback is send to Raspberry pi.
In the new setup, I have to place the Arduino and ESP under a platform in a large Aluminium box. Hence I selected ESP32-WROVER-IE module with an external antenna to replace ESP8266.

  • I want to use a high gain antenna and I found out there are two options, SMA and RPSMA which are connected through IPEX to SMA/RPSMA connector to ESP32. Which type should be selected? Does the type really matter since we are anyway connecting it to IPEX connector in the end?
  • Is there any difference between the antennas used for GSM/Telecom network modules and the ones used for Wi-Fi/routers/modems?
  • Finally, Are there any other factors to consider ? such as impedance, antenna matching, etc (found these terms in some guide related to antenna selection)
