ESP32-P4 this is insane

Postby djixon » Fri Aug 16, 2024 10:25 am

With 222 Euros price for P4 dev board
https://de.aliexpress.com/w/wholesale-e ... t.search.0
, that product is not going to survive ...... A chance for P4 to take a place and replace the current products of similar capabilities exists only with the price under 15 Bucks or so. Take for an example Orange Pi 5 or 6 ..... its kinda 10 times stronger platform, with 64 bit 8 cores CPU, 3D GPU chip, 4 GB RAM, PCI-e interface, HDMI etc for just a half of that price.

ESP should not allow such a dumb price formation for their products (doesn't matter if it is hot new or not)

P4 is supposed to be high performance (400 Mhz) highly integrated soc with AI implemented instructions, h264 hardware codec and a lot of other interesting things packed into hardware. It doesnt have wifi or bt, (if that is required then some of esp32 chips from C or S families can be added like on that dev board). It is mainlly designed for LAN network and high computing demanded applications AI oriented.

The ESP32-P4-Function-EV-Board can be found for $55. Quite cheap for all they packed on that dev board.
You cannot compare "Orange Pi 5 or 6 ....." to the ESP32, they are entirely different animals. This new P4 crushes most micros out there.

Off course, I didn't want to compare hardware cappabilities because those two dev board are from two completelly different categories. My intention was focused on prices just to point out that price of 222 Euros is way tooopp high because for half of that price you can buy 10 times (or more) stronger platform from higher category.

Please, can you provide some link for purchase of that ev board with price of 55 $ ?

The ESP32-P4-Function-EV-Board is the first P4 board on the market. For me it's a "tryout anything" board. It includes so many interfaces, a microphone and even a physical on-off-switch. This board is for early tests to see what's possible with the enhanced performance and new modules inside the P4 in combination with different external devices.

I'm sure we will see much simpler boards for lower prices when the processor is available to the board manufacturers in larger quantities.

I bought 2 of these and so far i am very happy. For now its just a hobby toy for me and a chance to learn new stuff, but i am playing with it more than with any other esp32 chip.

It has 7" display and camera. Demo app looks almost like a poor android or linux.
We can run wifi apps from previous chips without or almost no changes required, its enough to add module from component registry (ble probably too, not tested yet).
Camera, audio IN and OUT, ive never been working with it, but will have to. Not mention RMII (only issue is that examples come with wrongly assigned pins).
USB high speed - its what i am spending all my time right now. And im pretty sure its not all get.

Sure, we can find more powerful SoCs on the market, not mention kendryte K210 and K510 which are powerful in AI, or WCH chips with USB 3 super speed and BLE5.3. All are for quite some time on market, but none of them seems to have community and suport comparable to espressif (or i just didnt make enough research).

So, if someone want to earn some money and buy from espressif boards for 60 and trying to sell for 200+, why not.
