Flash Download Tool Hardware Support?

Postby ESP32nooob » Tue Aug 06, 2024 4:12 pm

Hello, I would like a _simple_ solution to program binaries into an ESP32-WROOM-32UE-N4 module. I have an ESP-Module-Prog-1 v1.0. Following the web page for the ESP-Module-Prog-1, I found the Flash Download Tool. I have downloaded this tool and installed the CP210x driver. According to the datasheets for the ESP32-WROOM module, the internal chip should be ESP32-D0WD-V3.

I can not get the Flash Download Tool to communicate with the ESP32 module. I question if the ESP32-D0WD-V3 chip is supported by the Flash Download Tool software. Does anyone know if this chip is supported by Flash Download Tool? If so, which device type should I select in the software? What would be the best (and most simple!) software tool to program binaries into this module?

Thank you for helping.

That module contains a standard ESP32 which is absolutely supported. Can you elaborate a bit about the issues you have with it? Preferably also give some info about the connections between the ESP-Prog and your module.

When I start the Flash Download Tool (FDT), it gives me a menu to select the "ChipType" of ESP module I would like to program. I have selected ESP32. When the FDT gets to the main screen, I have options to Start, Stop, and Erase. Unfortunately, FDT does not detect the module. FDT should report crystal speed, memory size, etc. FTD gives error messages.

It was not clear to me if ESP32-D0WD-V3 is supported by FDT. I could not find FDT documentation with a list of supported modules and what ChipType should be selected for each module type.

The connections between the ESP-Prog and the module should be very simple. Just plug the module into the programmer. The programmer has spring terminals that contact the castellated holes of the module. Programmer connects to computer with USB3 cable.

I verified the serial port is COM12, 115200 baud in device manager.

FDT has a DOS window in the background that prints "null" if I select the "start" or "erase" buttons.

I have decided to download the ESP-IDF. I was not expecting to have to do this, as I only need to flash binaries. I followed the instructions to build and flash the "hello world" program. Everything just worked. This confirms the ESP32 hardware is connected and working.

I followed the instructions:
https://docs.espressif.com/projects/esp ... setup.html

Now, how can I get the Flash Download Tool working? Any help is appreciated. Thanks.
