ESP32-U4WDH does it need external memory?

I am planning to use the esp32-u4wdh into a new design. From what I understand the chip comes with 4 mega of flash in the chip itself. But in the documentation is saying that external flash si compulsory. So, my question, is: Can I use the chip just with the internal flash without connecting any external flash memory?
