WROVER-KIT v4.1 5V-supply safety vs USB

Simple question: is it electrically safe to have the WROVER-KIT 4.1 board, being powered by an external 5V supply, while also connected to USB for JTAG debugging?
I have some other devboards that don't have an explicit jumper connection to select the 5V supply source, and at least one of them has a loud warning in the docs about not having 5V supply and USB connected at the same time. Needless to say with the device plugged into a system that is powering other devices (where USB supply current is insufficient) it has value to be able to accept the central power and also be able to debug.
Just looking for some clarity on this so I don't zap my WROVER-KIT or my laptop USB.
