Lolin D32 External Power Switch with Battery

Hi all,
I wonder if there is a way to use an external power switch to power on/off the D32?
I'd like to be able to use a battery connected to the onboard JST connector. To power the board, but also to be charged via USB.
I've done a bunch of research, but don't want to go ahead and break a board by doing something silly.
As i see it the options are:

As i see it the options are:
- Put the switch on one of the battery leads - However: means that D32 will power on with USB - and if USB connected and switch off then battery will not charge
- Use deep sleep using one of the GPIO pins - Will always be using some power - Will it reliably wake up after 100s of deep sleeps?
- Use the switch to keep EN pin high - Not sure if it's possible / wise to keep the pin high for long periods, and what power consumption this would have compared to deep sleep?
