Controlling TMC2209 Driver

I'm using a Trinamic TMC2209 driver to control a stepper motor but to use the more advanced features it needs to be controlled via UART. I'm trying to just read the first register but I can't get the TMC2209 to respond to my command. Does anyone have experience using UART to control Trinamic stepper drivers and could help me?
