ESP32-WROOM-32 external Wi-Fi antenna?

Postby Resch2061 » Thu Apr 12, 2018 10:34 am

Hello all,

We'd like to attach an external Wifi antenna to the Wroom-32. Is this possible?

You need ESP-WROOM-32U device with uses IPEX antenna connector.

I have tested both the on antenna version ESP-WROOM-02 and the external antenna version ESP-WROOM-02U.

How is it possible the pcb antenna version (ESP-WROOM-02) is more successful than external antenna version(ESP-WROOM-02U)?

Note that the Wroom-02 is esp8266-based, so you're not exactly on the right forum, but with that being said: It depends. External antennas won't give you better performance by default: the on-chip antenna on the Wroom modules actually is pretty decent and connected directly to the LNA of the ESP, without anything in between. An external antenna will have some losses in the connector and transmission line, and I'm sure you can get antennas that perform worse than the built-in one. External antennas are mostly useful in a situation where the module is inside a Faraday cage or otherwise has difficulties getting the internal antenna to work.

In general, the on board antenna is PIFA structure, means it has approximately 0dBi gain (around this number). With external antenna, we talking a proper dipole, with 2.15dBi gain, connected to the board with good RF method, you will get better range. What antenna are you using and how do you position them? Polarisation is important as well.
