I understand that the placement of the -1 version (on board antenna) is critical. Are there any special considerations with PCB location when using the -1U option (externa1 antenna)?

I do not want to place it on the edge of my board.

No, there are not. The antenna placement specifically is the critical thing, and since the -1U doesn't have an antenna, you can place it anywhere. Note that antenna placement still is critical for good range, so you probably want to follow the external antenna manufacturers recommendation for that.
