esp32-c6 and external PSRAM?

Postby lerebel103@gmail.com » Thu May 18, 2023 6:22 am

Hi there,

Is it possible to add external SPI PSRAM to esp32-c6 and have it work seamlessly with esp-idf as in past SoCs? Unlike prior modules, it seems esp32-c6 series SOCs do not come with an external PSRAM option.

Thanks for any pointers.

Kind Reagards,
Will.

No, sorry, the C6 (and all of the current members of the C series, for that matter) lack the internal hardware to incorporate PSRAM into their memory map.

Ha! Thank you for confirming, that makes sense now.
Is there an ESP32 series with WiFi6, or will there be one soon, where PSRAM is offered?
Kind Regards,
Will.

There likely will be at some point, but at this moment no S-series chips with WiFi6 has been announced. (In the shorter term, when the radio-less but pretty high spec ESP32-P4 gets to market, we'll have some way of pairing it with a C6, allowing you to have a high-spec solution capable of WiFi6.)

No problem, thanks for the info.
Look forward to a solution in this space, particularly with ultra low power possibilities of WiFi6 and TWT.

The recently-announced ESP32-C61 (lower cost version of ESP32-C6) will include PSRAM support to compensate for the smaller amount of the internal SRAM.
